welcome

Frequently we run multiple wellness programs and classes in a wide variety health issues such as diabetes, cardio and hypertension disease management at our various locations.

These classes are designed to help you better take of yourself health-wise and educate you in self care. "Self care" is a new concept that's increasing in the healthcare industry. University Medical Clinics are advocates for self care, especially in chronic conditions, such as diabetes, where lifestyle has a great deal of impact.

Diabetes Self-Management Education (Part 1 of 2)
Whether you have had Type 2 diabetes for years or were just diagnosed, this class is for you. Learn the basics such as healthy eating, being active, and self-monitoring. Learn how to recognize and treat high and low blood sugar levels and monitor your blood glucose (blood sugar). Learn how to control diabetes. Bring your meter (and your family) with you.

Diabetes Self-Management Education (Part 2 of 2)
This class helps participants learn how taking medication, problem solving, reducing risks and healthy coping can have an impact on their well-being. Participants will learn about their Diabetes ABCs (A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol), target goals which can help control diabetes. At the completion of this class, you will be able to confidently set your own personal goals with your doctor.

Diabetes and Healthy Eating (Carbohydrate Counting)
Discover how wise food choices can help you manage your diabetes (and blood pressure and cholesterol) and lead you to a healthier life. Learn about carbohydrates and which ones give you the best control (and which ones will wreck your blood sugar readings). Become an expert on how to figure out what really matters on the nutrition facts panel on packaged foods. This healthy eating class will help you understand how nutrition not only makes you feel better but also helps you control your diabetes.

Diabetes Support Group
Find the support you need to handle the emotional issues, such as depression and sexual problems, experienced by many people with diabetes. Guest speakers will bring information on the topics you request.

Pre-diabetes
If you have been told by your doctor that you have prediabetes or are a "borderline" diabetic, learn how to make small changes so that your pre-diabetes does not progress to a diabetes diagnosis. This class will give you the knowledge, tools, and support to help you stop pre-diabetes in its tracks.

Smoking Cessation
If you have diabetes and smoke, you are at a much higher risk for complications such as amputation of a leg or foot or kidney disease. Once you have made the decision that you are willing and ready to quit smoking, please call us so we can partner with you for your successful transition to becoming a non-smoker.

Weight Management
If you have diabetes and are not at a healthy weight, your body is working harder than normal to convert your food into energy. By choosing to move slow and smart towards a healthier weight, most people can better control their diabetes, can reduce the medications they need to take, and feel better.

Blood Glucose Self-Monitoring
This one-hour class will ensure that you know how to correctly use your blood glucose meter for accurate test results and how to alter your plan if your blood sugar is not where it should be. You will also learn about the glucose meter features and the factors that affect glucose meter performance. You will learn about preventing low and high blood sugars and also what to do if you have them.

Healthy Heart
This class is designed for anyone on medication or at risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Learn how making healthier food choices can lower your blood pressure and improve your blood cholesterol. Topics include sodium and high blood pressure, and good and bad fats and high cholesterol, as well as physical activity and its important role in controlling blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
